4 Thoughts on “Wyoming football playoff scenarios entering Week 8

  1. Rawlins on October 20, 2013 at 12:32 pm said:

Worland is not eliminated and Cody is not in. If Worland beats Cody and Jackson beats Star Valley, Worland is in and Cody is out.

Dang it, you’re right, Rawlins. Not sure how I overlooked that. It’s fixed. Thanks.

  3. How does the three-way playoff work should the 2A need to use it?

  4. Patrick on October 21, 2013 at 10:04 am said:

Jen — The playoff between Lyman, Greybull and Thermopolis, should it happen, would be played on Tuesday at a neutral site (probably Riverton or Lander). They flip a coin, and the odd team sits out. The remaining two teams play a half. The winner of that half plays the team that won the coin flip in a second half.

If the same team wins both halves, they’re the 3 seed and the team that won the regular-season game between the remaining two teams is the 4 seed.

If different teams win the halves, the loser of the first half can challenge the winner of the second half only if the loser of the first half won the regular-season game with the team it’s trying to challenge. If they didn’t, the winner of the second half is the 3 seed and the winner of the regular-season game between the two teams (NOT the winner of the first half of the playoff) is the 4 seed. … If they did, a third half is played. If the same team wins the second and third halves, it’s the 3 seed, and the winner of the regular-season game (NOT the playoff) of the remaining two teams is the 4 seed.

If we get through three halves and the tie is still in place, then they go to overtimes. (This is the new rule that wasn’t in place in the 1A 11-man coin flip decider in 2011.) As soon as a team wins two overtimes in one session, it’s the 3 seed, and the regular-season winner between the two remaining teams is the 4. (Well, up to three overtime periods, then a point differential from the playoff halves (not the overtimes) will be used. Best point differential is the 3 seed; the winner of the regular-season game between the two remaining teams is the 4 seed.)

The WHSAA lines it all out in its handbook, too (page 46-47): http://www.whsaa.org/handbook/handbook.asp
