7 Thoughts on “2011 football schedules

  1. Patrick on November 9, 2010 at 11:26 am said:

I’ll post some of my initial thoughts:

Rivalry games are early in 4A, especially in Cheyenne: Central-South week 1; Central-East week 3; East-South week 4. South also gets to host both Central and East in 2011, while Central has to go to both East and South… odd.

South’s first schedule is brutal the first three weeks: at Natrona in Week 0; home vs. Central in Week 1; at Sheridan in Week 2. Welcome to 4A, Bison.

Other rivalries: Oil Bowl is Week 4 (probably Sept. 23) and Energy Bowl is Week 5 (probably Sept. 30). The Natrona-Sheridan rematch also got moved up to Week 1….

Lander-Riverton is back in its rightful place in Week 8. That’s cool to see.

Green River draws both Buffalo and Douglas for its nonconference schedule. We’ll see how the Wolves stack up against 3A’s best right away. Awesome….

Another rivalry that’s going away: Torrington-Wheatland. They’ve played each other every year since 1934. I’m imploring those two schools to keep the rivalry going in Zero Week next season.

Speaking of Wheatland, the Bulldogs have four new opponents in 2011: Wright, Moorcroft, Big Horn and Tongue River.

Buffalo-Douglas rematch is Week 4. Be there.

The unbalanced 1A East schedule has been solved in big part by Hill City, S.D., a school that will play three Wyoming schools in 2011. A couple sub-varsity teams and a couple open weeks fill out the unbalanced schedule.

The eight-game, 10-team schedule in six-man means teams will see all but one team in the regular season. Those phantom matchups: Ten Sleep-Midwest, Snake River-Hulett, Hanna-Meeteetse and Farson-Dubois.

There are some of my initial reactions… How about yours?

It’s selfish but the first thing I noticed was three road games in four weeks for SV: @ Douglas, @ Worland @ Cody. Lots of windshield time for that month baby!

Agree with you about traditional rivalries, The Blazers and the Bulldogs should keep it up.

  3. Patrick on November 9, 2010 at 5:09 pm said:

Agreed, Dahl… makes for a long month. The flipside is that the Braves will probably have those dates reversed next year… making October “windshield month.” 🙂

A couple other things I’ve noticed: Rawlins will play Sidney, Neb. It’s the first time Rawlins has ever played a school from Nebraska. …

The Snake River-Hanna rematch will be a Week 5 showdown. Meanwhile, Thermopolis and Big Horn won’t play next year….

Obviously, the schools that changed classifications (Green River, Wheatland, Wyoming Indian, Dubois and Hulett) had the most changes to their schedules. Green River has played Douglas just one time previously (1949) and Buffalo just once, as well (1976 state championship). The Wolves haven’t played Worland since 1985 and haven’t played Powell since 1982….

Wyoming Indian was in 1A not that long ago and are fairly familiar with most of the 2011 opponents….

Obviously Hulett and Dubois will be playing some of those startup six-man programs for the first time (Farson, Snake River, Kaycee). It is interesting that Meeteetse and Dubois will play for the first time since 1998. It’s surprising given their proximity but shouldn’t be, given their split paths of football the past decade.

Eagle vs. Eagles in Week One

  5. Just a quick question. Why is the WHSAA forcing Guernsey to Meeteetse for the second straight year?

  6. Patrick on November 10, 2010 at 7:51 am said:

Terryl, with Hulett and Dubois coming in, the WHSAA couldn’t just flip the schedules from this year. They had to completely rebuild them from scratch. When that happens, sometimes you get things like this happening. I think the WHSAA’s first concern was for balance between road and home games and between conference and non-conference games; addressing things like your problem were probably a lesser concern then achieving overall balance not only for Guernsey but for everyone in six-man.

Also note that it’s been tough for the WHSAA to get any consistency in the six-man schedule over the past three years. In 2009 the schedule was built with the assumption that Rock River and Fort Washakie Charter were fielding teams, and when they didn’t the schedule was pretty much ruined. For this year, the WHSAA built a new schedule from scratch that didn’t have Rock River or Fort Washakie Charter involved. Then, with Hulett and Dubois coming down in 2011, they had to build a whole new schedule again. On the plus side, the schedule will probably just flip-flop home and away dates in 2012 — that is, if all the programs stay afloat.
