5 Thoughts on “Unofficial first-round playoff pairings

  1. quick question how does a three way playoff work?

Three-way playoffs happen on neutral fields and will be played on Tuesday; time and locations will be announced some time this weekend. Here’s how it breaks down:

First, the three teams all flip coins; the odd team sits out the first half.

Then, one of two scenarios unfolds:

One, the same team wins both halves. They take the top remaining seed. Whoever won between the two losing teams in the regular season takes the other seed.

Two, the team that won the first half loses the second half. The team that won the second half may be challenged by the team that lost the first half, but only if the team that lost the first half won the game between the two teams in the regular season. If that third half is played, the winner takes the highest remaining seed and the loser the second (as I understand it); if it is not played, the team that won the second half is the highest remaining seed and the team that won the first half gets the other seed.

The second scenario is definitely the more confusing of the two.

So, Patrick, what is the official rule on the Buffalo @ Rawlins game? The score was 21-0 Bison in the first quarter when the power goes out and they call the game. Do they have to make it up? Or does it stand? Is it up to Rawlins whether or not they want to challenge the called game? Just curious. It brings back bad memories of the Utah @ Wyoming game years ago, a.k.a. the Brown Out game. Did ABC try and come into Rawlins field? šŸ™‚

Dahl, I haven’t heard. That is a decision for somebody above my pay grade to decide. When that important person/those important people decide what decision is to be made, I will pass it along.

I think there are NFHS rules that state a game must be played at least two quarters to count, but I could be wrong.

Looks like there are three options to me: (1) play the rest of the game out on Saturday/Monday; (2) simply cancel it (no loss for Rawlins/victory for Buffalo in the final standings); (3) somebody forfeits (likely Rawlins, because they were behind). Not sure which one is happening/will happen/has happened.

Well, that’s the story through the grapevine, so I suppose facts are in order. I imagine it would be most likely scenario #1 or #3. Despite Rawlins’ struggles this year that would be a tough way to end your season if it’s #3.
