Three Wyoming high schools made the switch to artificial turf over the summer, bringing the total number of schools with fake grass on their football fields in the state to 14.

Cheyenne Central, Powell and Lusk all switched over to artificial turf. They join Big Horn, Cody, Douglas, Jackson, Moorcroft, Natrona, Pinedale, Riverton, Rock Springs, Sheridan and Star Valley as schools with artificial surfaces.

Construction in Lusk is a bit behind that in Cheyenne. In addition to a new turf football field, Lusk will have a new track surface, as well. Here are a couple looks at the progress in Lusk, courtesy of Cory Griffith:

The work in Powell was a bit more extensive, as an entirely new facility was constructed. The stadium was completed last year. To see photos of the field in Powell, check out the school district photo gallery.

Green River will have turf field and new track in the fall of 2013. Same stadium location, just an update, much needed update. Will be multi-purpose complex with soccer, track and football.

Looking forward to playing at Powell’s new place this October. The big question is does the big burning “P” make the move over to the new field?

Thanks for the update Steve, I think that will leave Lander as one of the few teams we play every season that has embraced grass.

  4. I might be wrong but I think Tongue River also has an artificial field?

I haven’t heard that one, Ted… anyone up in Dayton/Ranchester who can shed some light on this one?

There is NO turf at TR…the school is starting to talk about lights….hope not, nothing beats watching a Friday afternoon football game from “the best view in all of high school football”.

  7. Thank you Patrick, a lovely post showing the transformation of the field and the amount of schools that are switching over to the synthetic turf. There are a lot of benefits for this, it can really help with drainage and make upkeep easier, which is why it is becoming more and more popular.
