For those of you who wonder how I got started with this project, click here. Back when I was in high school, I started putting together a game-by-game record for my alma mater, Midwest. That project expanded in college to what I have now. Anyway, most of that project was built using yearbooks in the MHS library, and a while back I went back and compared the scores on that list to the scores I’ve compiled since. From that, I came up with one addition and one correction that I recently verified:

Corrected the score for Midwest’s 13-7 victory over Upton on Oct. 12, 1956 (I had the score transposed, Upton winning 13-7)

Added Midwest’s 26-7 victory over the Natrona JV on Sept. 17, 1954

I’m still working on a couple more for MHS that don’t quite match up….

Coaches project: Updates for Cowley, Cokeville and Deaver-Frannie. Click here to see what I still need; I now have every coach’s name for every team from 1971 to the present.

Streaks: Somehow I forgot Rock Springs’ 22-game winning streak from 2001-02 when I put together the streaks page. No longer; that has been added to the streaks page.

Update: Lusk’s 20-game win streak from 1999-2000 is now listed on the streaks page, too. Thanks to Jerry Fullmer for the catch!

The microfilm has gone mostly unused the past couple weeks. Midterms, teaching, etc., are taking precedence right now. Nevertheless, I made it down to Coe’s basement a couple times in the past couple weeks and knocked a few games off the missing games list:

Found the score for Pine Bluffs’ 26-6 loss to the Cheyenne Central JV on Oct. 28, 1954.

Removed two games that were not played: the Oct. 11, 1952, game between Big Piney and Baggs and the Oct. 26, 1951, game between Hanna and Baggs.

I also added one game: Rawlins’ 72-0 victory over Kemmerer on Oct. 3, 1953. This game also showed that I had listed the wrong record for Rawlins in 1953; that has been corrected. This loss for Kemmerer also extended its losing streak over this period to 24 games, an update reflected on the streaks page.

All the updates have been made on all the relevant pages.

I also updated Coaches Project entries for four programs: Byron, Lovell, Cokeville and Star Valley. Check out those individual team pages to see what’s new.

Some updates I’ve found in the past couple weeks:

Missing games

Found the date for Manville’s 18-13 victory over Sunrise on Sept. 12, 1952.

Found the score for Wheatland’s 20-6 loss to Eaton, Colo., on Nov. 2, 1945.

Found the date for Cokeville’s 20-12 victory over Big Piney on Oct. 20, 1944 (stays on missing games list because I couldn’t find the location).

Found the score for St. Mary’s 44-6 victory over Burns on Sept. 24, 1943.

Found the location of Reliance’s 32-6 victory over Pinedale on Oct. 8, 1943 (it was in Pinedale).

Noted that Big Piney won its game against the Green River JV on Sept. 2, 1995 (stays on missing games list because I haven’t found a final score).

Noted that Glendo won its game against the Natrona JV on Oct. 6, 1967 (stays on missing games list because I haven’t found a final score).

Coaches Project: Updates for Big Piney, Glendo, Guernsey, Jackson, Lander, Manville, Pinedale, Riverton, Shoshoni, St. Mary’s, Sunrise, Wheatland, Worland. Check out those individual team pages to see the progress.

The rain here in Laramie has put a crimp in my outdoor work, so I’ve found some time to go to the library and make some updates. In addition to continuing my research on 1932, I added these updates:

Meeteetse’s 2002 season was filled in quite a bit. I took one game off the missing games list, finding the date for the Sept. 27 game between the Longhorns and Midwest. I also added three games — a 42-38 victory over the Cody sophomores on Sept. 19, a loss to Roberts, Mont., on Oct. 7 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t find a score) and a 40-30 victory over Joliet, Mont., on Oct. 14 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t pin down a location).

I also stumbled across some more information in Burlington’s 1943 season and added two games: a 39-0 victory over Shoshoni sometime between Oct. 13 and 16 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t find the exact date) and a 20-18 loss to Basin on Nov. 5.

I also got a hold of some more Rapid City Journal microfilm and knocked six more games off the missing games list, including three from Hulett’s 1959 season. For that season, I found the score for Hulett’s 12-o victory over Vale, S.D., on Sept. 4; found the score for Hulett’s 33-13 loss to Nisland, S.D., on Sept. 11; and found the score for Hulett’s 25-0 loss to Buffalo, S.D., on Oct. 30.

The others: Found the score for Hulett’s 32-6 loss to Hill City, S.D., on Sept. 7, 1984; found the score and corrected the date for Hulett’s 47-25 loss to Newell, S.D., on Oct. 4, 1967; found the score for Douglas’ 13-0 victory over Edgemont, S.D., on Sept. 11, 1970

Coaches Project: Updates for Basin, Greybull and Thermopolis.

All the updates have been made on all the relevant pages.

A few months ago, I posted a list of the winningest coaches in Wyoming high school football history. Since then, I’ve updated the list to include coaches from 1933 to 1945, and the list has shuffled a bit.

Here are the overall records for Wyoming coaches that have won at least 90 games, at least according to the listings I have:

Coach Wins Losses Ties
Dayton, Todd 242 49 0
Deti, John E. 204 94 8
Deti, John R. 188 102 2
Fullmer, Jerry 174 82 0
McDougall, John 156 115 2
Eskelsen, Joel 147 81 0
Hoff, Dallas 144 95 6
Gray, Walter 140 87 0
Moon, Mike 136 79 1
Scherry, Rick 133 84 1
Hill, Art 132 92 3
Bailey, Harold 128 92 0
Blanchard, Okie 126 36 4
Mirich, Carl 124 101 1
Keith, Bruce 117 82 0
Harshman, Steve 114 64 0
Dinnel, Don 113 61 0
Petronovich, Pete 113 102 5
Fackrell, Kay 111 79 0
Bartlett, Doug 102 73 0
Smith, Ben 101 33 0
Miller, Barry 97 83 1
Wiseman, Jim 97 50 1
Hart, Jerry 95 40 2
Gamble, Tony 93 55 2
Bullington, Mark 92 19 0
Steege, Rich 91 119 0

The big addition to this list from the 1933-45 era is Okie Blanchard, who posted a 126-36-4 record from 1933-52 with Rock Springs, Natrona and Cheyenne Central. His career record is probably better than that, as I believe he spent a few years prior to 1933 coaching, as well. It’s interesting to note that Blanchard was also the UW football coach in 1941, in between his three-year stint coaching Natrona and his 11 years at Central.

It’s also interesting that Blanchard split time at three schools. That’s sort of a rarity for the list, which is dominated by guys who pretty much stayed at one school. Other coaches on the list who were head coaches at three schools are John R. Deti (Cody, Sheridan and Laramie), Art Hill (Glenrock, Riverton and Natrona), Don Dinnel (Mountain View, Rawlins and Evanston) and Kay Fackrell (Goshen Hole, Lyman and Evanston).

Well, now that I’m in the mood…

These coaches stayed (or have stayed, so far) at one school as head coach: Dayton (Cokeville); Fullmer (Lusk); Eskelsen (Big Piney); Gray (Tongue River); Moon (Buffalo); Scherry (Big Horn); Bailey (Shoshoni); Harshman (Natrona); Petronovich (Douglas); Bartlett (Torrington); Smith (Rocky Mountain); Miller (Goshen Hole/Southeast); and Bullington (Southeast).

The remainder were at two schools: John E. Deti (Meeteetse, Laramie); McDougall (Dubois, Cody); Hoff (Superior, Midwest); Mirich (Goshen Hole, Moorcroft); Keith (Sheridan, Kelly Walsh); Wiseman (Lingle, Torrington); Hart (Green River, Star Valley); Gamble (Guernsey-Sunrise, Wright); Steege (Burns, Pinedale).

Of course, this is an incomplete list. It doesn’t include coaching records prior to 1933 and doesn’t include coaches who are missing (you can find out which teams those are by checking out the list of missing coaches for the Coaches Project).

Wow. Nearly 3,000 more games over the course of 13 seasons — the newest site update was a massive one. However, now, every season from 1933 to 1945 is posted here for you to check out.

The late 1930s and early 1940s were definitely an interesting time in Wyoming’s high school football history. From the playoff structure to school infighting to six-man football to World War II, this was a time of change. I don’t think any other time period saw as much change in Wyoming high school football as the 12 years from 1934 to 1946… but I’ll fill you in on all that later.

For now, check out your favorite team’s page to see how they did in the 13 years from 1933 to 1945, the newest additions to this site. Also, take time to check out the pages I added for the seven programs in this era that disbanded for good before the end of World War II: the Carpenter Coyotes, the Fort Laramie Pioneers, the Fort Washakie Indians, the Gebo Miners, the Hawk Springs Hawks, the Heart Mountain Eagles and Monarch.

Check out the all-time standings for every program, either by winning percentage or by number of victories. Adding 13 years to these standings shook them up quite a bit!

Look at the school timeline (at the bottom of the page) and see when the state has seen its most movement of teams.

Scour the missing games list and the Coaches Project listings to see if you can help me fill in some missing information!

Most of all, take the time to browse at your own pace, looking at what you want when you want. Enjoy what I’ve posted. After all, that’s why it is there in the first place.

Meanwhile, for me, the research continues. I’ve been slowed down by life a bit this summer, but hopefully within the next 10 months, my research will be “done.” Coe Library awaits….

(By the way, the latest update helped me reach an interesting milestone for this site. I have now logged 20,014 games, finally breaking that 20,000 barrier! If you’re interested, I keep a running total after each site update on the front page of the site.)

So the big news for today is that I’m starting to upload the seasons 1933 through 1945 onto the Web site. It will take several days, maybe several weeks, so bear with me as I make changes to basically every page on this site. Trust me, it’ll be worth it.

In other news, Nebraska microfilm, from the interlibrary loan department at Coe, arrived this week. It helped me with some updates:

Missing games

Added the score for Goshen Hole’s 34-12 loss to Lyman, Neb., on Sept. 23, 1966.

Found the date and location for Huntley’s 22-7 victory over the Gering, Neb., JV on Oct. 12, 1966 (it was in Huntley).

Found the score for Huntley’s 12-6 loss to the Gering, Neb., JV on Sept. 15, 1965.

Found the location of Huntley’s 13-7 victory over Lyman, Neb., on Oct. 6, 1965 (it was in Huntley).

Found the score for Albin’s 38-18 loss to Morrill, Neb., on Oct. 4, 1950.

Found the score for Guernsey’s 34-6 loss to Lyman, Neb., on Nov. 3, 1950.

Found the location of Albin’s 41-6 loss to Harrisburg, Neb., on Nov. 3, 1950 (it was in Harrisburg).

Coaches Project

Updates for Byron and Huntley.

–patrick

Here are my most recent updates. Since I’m almost broke, I’m working at a job that actually pays money now, so updates may be a bit more few and far between until school starts again in August. I’m not sure anyone will notice but me….

Additions

Added Byron’s 33-6 victory over Colstrip, Mont., on Sept. 19, 1952.

Added a canceled game on Sept. 26, 1958, between the Worland Institute and Buffalo.

Added a pair of games for Byron for 1956 — at Burlington on Oct. 13 and at Manderson on Oct. 26 (and added both to the missing games list because I couldn’t find scores/results for either game). This was a state championship season for Byron, so I’m really trying hard to pin down every game they played in this season.

Added a pair of games for Albin for 1951 — at Dix, Neb., on Oct. 19 and at home against Harrisburg, Neb., on Nov. 2 (and added both to the missing games list because I couldn’t find scores/results for either game).

Missing games

Found the date for Deaver-Frannie’s 48-12 victory over Belfry, Mont., on Sept. 14, 1951.

Found the score for Huntley’s 38-0 loss to Lyman, Neb., on Sept. 27, 1957.

Found the location for Glendo’s 32-28 loss to Lyman, Neb., on Oct. 26, 1956 (it was in Glendo).

All-state teams

The 1973 Class A all-state team has been added to the all-state listings.

Coaches Project

Updates for Huntley.

–patrick

One of the toughest aspects of this project has been securing scores played against out-of-state opponents. The number of missing games to the number of out-of-state games is ridiculously out of proportion. Fortunately, today, I made a couple big steps in rectifying this.

Using the interlibrary loan capabilities at Coe Library, I secured four microfilm rolls of the Rapid City Journal. Those four rolls helped me take six games off my missing games list — a significant dent in an ever-shrinking project.

I’m also in the process of obtaining some more microfilm from Rapid City (you can only get four at a time) and from Scottsbluff (that costs money). Anyway, I’m making a big dent in this part of the missing games project.

The six games KOed today:

Hulett had four games knocked off the missing games list, all from the early 1960s. I found the score for Hulett’s 25-6 victory over Hill City on Sept. 7, 1963, the score for Hulett’s 42-12 victory over New Underwood on Oct. 9, 1963, the score for Hulett’s 12-8 loss to Buffalo, S.D., on Sept. 14, 1962, and the score for Hulett’s 25-13 loss to Newell on Oct. 28, 1960.

I also found the scores for two Moorcroft games in 1989: a 49-6 loss to Lead on Sept. 8 and a 28-0 victory over Rapid City St. Martins on Sept. 16. The win over St. Martins was actually Moorcroft’s only victory that season.

That inspired me to look for some more stuff with a fresh attitude, and conversely I found some info that had been missing for a long time. This is what I found:

Byes Project

Added two games for Pine Bluffs in 1952 — a 19-12 victory over the Laramie JV on Sept. 20 and a 12-0 victory over the Scottsbluff, Neb., JV on Sept. 24.

Added Basin’s 13-13 tie with the Worland Institute on Sept. 10, 1954.

Missing games

Found the date and location of Midwest’s 34-6 victory over the Upton JV on Aug. 30, 2002. (This is part of Midwest’s sub-varsity 2002 season, which has been a tough season for me to pin down exact dates… but this game, at least, is done.)

Found the location for Rocky Mountain’s 26-0 victory over the Cody JV on Oct. 15, 1994 (it was in Cody).

Found the location for Hulett’s 42-12 loss to St. Thomas More, S.D., on Sept. 29, 1992 (it was in Hulett).

Found the score for Wheatland’s 6-0 loss to the Cheyenne East JV on Aug. 29, 1969.

Found the location of Huntley’s 41-12 victory over Harrison, Neb., on Oct. 12, 1962 (it was in Huntley).

Found the missing score for Meeteetse’s 40-20 loss to the Cody JV on Oct. 22, 1959.

Found the missing date for Huntley’s 46-6 victory over Albin in 1951 — Oct. 26.

Also, thanks to coach Ted Holmstrom down in Lyman, I have the score of the Eagles’ loss to Mountain View on Oct. 12, 1963 — 43-0. Coach Holmstrom has been a big help to me on locating some missing info for the Eagles and his help is really appreciated!

Coaches Project: New listings for Arvada-Clearmont.

All the updates have been made on all the relevant pages.

Also, research continues backward in time. Years through 1935 are complete, and 1934 has been started…. Hey, who knew Gebo High School had a team? Yep, the Gebo Miners. Oh, and Fort Laramie High School also played football for a couple years? Hooray for finding out cool new stuff!

–patrick

The late 1960s were a crazy time in the southeastern corner of Wyoming. Goshen Hole, the precursor to what is now Southeast, started its program in 1966, and Burns followed a year later. I spent a big portion of this week trying to track down more information on the first seasons of these two programs and found a couple games to update.

I added two games to Burns’ first season, both losses to the Pine Bluffs JV squad — 27-20 on Oct. 3 and 41-26 on Oct. 18. (These two losses extended Burns’ winless streak in that span to 24 games, a change updated on the streaks page.)

I also found the score for Goshen Hole’s 54-19 loss to Harrisburg, Neb., on Sept. 30, 1966, knocking it off the missing games list in the process.

My research also turned up two more new games, courtesy of the Byes Project. I added Huntley’s 33-6 loss to Lyman, Neb., sometime between Sept. 12-16, 1967 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t pin down a date or a location) and Midwest’s 32-7 victory over Glendo on Sept. 3, 1965.

I also took care of two missing games for Saratoga’s 1955 season. I found the score, date and location for Saratoga’s 18-12 loss to the Rawlins JV on Oct. 4 and the score for Saratoga’s 13-0 loss to the Laramie JV on Oct. 13.

Coaches Project: I didn’t add any new coaches, but I did fix a couple discrepancies where I had two coaches coaching at two different schools in the same season.

I updated Green River’s coach in 1969; it was Chuck Shelton, not Jerry Hart. I had Jerry Hart listed as coaching in both Green River and Star Valley in 1969, so I double-checked and Hart was in Afton while Shelton had the reins in Green River.

I also ran into this problem with Rand Klatt, who I had listed as coaching both Pinedale and Hulett in 1965. I double-checked, and Klatt was in Pinedale that year. So now I’m looking hard to find out who Hulett’s coach was in 1965. So far, no luck. If you know, leave a comment below!

Basketball: I have updated the scores I was missing for the state basketball tournaments in 1923, 1925, 1929 and 1930. The years 1925, 1929 and 1930 didn’t need much research done for them, but 1923 had to be built up and researched basically from scratch. The year 1924 still need some additional research, but I hope to have that completed within the next couple weeks. We’ll see…. Click here to see this side project, every score from every state basketball tournament (except, obviously, for 1924).
