Big Horn’s Nolan McCafferty was named the state’s to football scholar-athlete in Wyoming for 2016 by the Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

McCafferty was one of 12 finalists for this award, which was handed out Saturday in Laramie.

McCafferty was awarded $2,400 in total scholarships; each of the other finalists earned $1,200.

The Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will recognize its scholar-athlete choices for 2016 in a ceremony Saturday in Laramie.

Each of the finalists earns a $1,200 scholarship, while the top scholar-athlete earns an additional $1,200 scholarship. The top scholar-athlete will represent Wyoming at the regional level.

This year’s finalists are Dalton Abarr from Meeteetse; Garrett Cooper from Lingle; Garrett Vezain from Rocky Mountain; Brennan Kutterer from Tongue River; Nolan McCafferty and Andrew Ratty from Big Horn; Ty Larson from Douglas; T.J. Abraham from Powell; McCabe Smith from Star Valley; Lane Tucker from Gillette; Coy Steel from Sheridan; and Caleb Price from Cheyenne South.

Twelve high school players have been named finalists for the scholar-athlete of the year award from the Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

One winner will be named from the group of 12 at a banquet March 19 (Saturday) in Laramie.

Each of the 12 finalists — a lineman and a back from each classification, plus two more finalists — earns a $1,200 scholarship, while the top scholar-athlete earns another $1,200 scholarship. More than 100 Wyoming football players have been nominated for one of the state’s top student-athlete honors: the Top Football Scholar Athlete award from the Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

In a release, Wyoming Chapter President Jeff Felton of Cheyenne noted that 101 athletes from 35 different schools have been nominated. A back and a lineman from all five classifications of high school football, as well as from the University of Wyoming, will be honored at the Wyoming Chapter’s annual banquet March 19 in Laramie. Finalists will receive $1,200 scholarships, while one winner will receive an additional scholarship and will be the state’s nominee for the Western Chapter Scholar Athlete of the Year; the winner of the Western Chapter award will be recognized at the national NFF banquet in New York City.

Academic achievement and football performance are weighted at 40 percent apiece in the group’s ranking system; community leadership makes up the remaining 20 percent. Nominees need a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Cheyenne East’s Tevis Bartlett was named Wyoming’s top scholar-athlete football player at the annual awards banquet for the National Football Foundation’s Wyoming chapter on Saturday.

Bartlett, who will attend the University of Washington for football, won a pair of $1,200 scholarships.

Other scholar-athletes were Lusk’s Martin Fitzwater; Natrona’s Josh Harshman; Cheyenne East’s Chandler Haukup; Mountain View’s Austin Houskeeper; Thermopolis’ Logan Kay; Dubois’ Kurt Leseberg; Big Horn’s Christian Mayer; Cody’s Carter Myers; Cokeville’s Jace Petersen; Guernsey’s Austin Quynn; Powell’s Riley Stringer; and Lusk’s Derick VandeBossche. Keenan Montgomery and Stuart Williams from the University of Wyoming were also honored. Players all won $1,200 scholarships apiece.

Wright’s Michael Yeradi was awarded the group’s scholar-athlete courage award.

Sheridan’s Tyler Julian was named the state’s top football scholar-athlete by the Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation during the group’s annual banquet on Saturday in Laramie.

Julian was one of 12 finalists for the award from around the state. Each finalist earned a $1,200 scholarship, while Julian as the top scholar-athlete was awarded an additional $1,200 scholarship.

The group also gave out a handful of other awards honoring fans, coaches, officials and players from around the state.

Julian will be the state’s nominee for regional and national NFF awards.

In all, 12 Wyoming high school football players are finalists for the chapter’s scholar-athlete of the year award. Finalists include Dubois’ Sterling Baker and Meeteetse’s Seth Bennett from Class 1A six-man; Cokeville’s Brock Teichert and Lusk’s Matt VandeBossche from Class 1A 11-man; Big Horn’s Miles Novak, Wright’s Stormy Roy and Glenrock’s Devon Parkinson from Class 2A; Powell’s Garrett Lynch and Hayden Cragoe and Douglas’ Logan Barker from Class 3A; and Sheridan’s Tyler Julian and Gillette’s Austin Fort from Class 4A.

From this group, one player will be chosen as the chapter’s top scholar-athlete, who will represent the state at the national level. Each winner will receive a $1,200 scholarship, and the winner will receive an additional $1,200 scholarship.

In addition, Big Horn’s Michael Lamb will be given the group’s Scholar-Athlete Courage Award and Cheyenne East’s Shane Brooks will be awarded the Scholar-Athlete Perseverance Award.

University of Wyoming players Spencer Bruce and Justin Bernthaler will also be honored.

The site, www.wyomingfootballfoundation.org, provides details on the group and its awards.

In addition to scholar-athlete awards, the group gives out awards for the greatest high school and University of Wyoming football fans, for career achievement in coaching and officiating and for other contributions to amateur football. The group also gives courage and perseverance awards to select players.

Powell’s Cooper Wise was named the state’s top scholar-athlete by the Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation on Saturday.

Wise was honored by the NFF during the group’s annual banquet in Laramie, chapter director Mike Schutte said. He was one of 11 finalists from around the state.

Wise is now in the running for the NFF’s regional and national scholar-athlete awards. All 11 players were awarded scholarships.

Other finalists included Sheridan’s Jordan Roberts, Natrona’s Jake Thomas, Torrington’s Zach Lurz, Lovell’s Mark Grant, Tongue River’s Austin Bolin (who played for Big Horn in 2011), Cokeville’s Bronson Teichert, Riverside’s Mike Miller and Tyler Williamson, Dubois’ Mitchell Baker and Snake River’s Daniel Wille.

University of Wyoming offensive lineman Clayton Kirven, of Buffalo, was named the chapter’s top college scholar-athlete.

The chapter also gave out several individual awards, including:
