Vic Wilkerson of Gillette and Matt VandeBossche of Lusk will be the head coaches for the 41st Shrine Bowl.

The game will be played June 14, 2014, in Casper.

Wilkerson will coach the North team and VandeBossche the South. Wilkerson was head coach for the North team in 2006, while VandeBossche is the Shrine Bowl head coach for the first time. This is the third time a coach from Lusk has led the South — former coach Jerry Fullmer was the South coach twice, in 1987 and 2000 — while Gillette will have a coach lead the North team for the fourth time.

The coaches will assemble their assistant coaching staffs and, together, the staffs will pick the players for the annual all-star football game.

The North, which won last year’s game 34-6, leads the all-time series 19-18-3.

Wheatland football coach Scott Schultz has resigned to pursue national opportunities tied to his work as a strength coach.

In an email to wyoming-football.com on Monday, Schultz said he is attempting to pursue a position as an athletic trainer with at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Schultz said he will move to Colorado in January.

Schultz said he is a nationally registered strength coach through the National Strength and Conditioning Association — one of 84 such people in the country — and a nationally certified performance enhancement specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

“It is my intention to go and pursue the national office as a trainer and hopefully get a chance to prove myself enough to get into the Olympic Training Center,” Schultz wrote. ” … All will take some work and persistence but is something I have been striving for over the last 10 years.”

Schultz started coaching at Wheatland in 2006. He went 30-42 in eight seasons with the Bulldogs. Wheatland reached the playoffs five times under Schultz and advanced to the semifinals in 2006.

A replacement has not yet been named.

The following head coaching changes are taking place for Wyoming high school football teams for the 2014 season:

Cheyenne Central: Drew Severn is set to take over as the Indians’ next head coach, per a school announcement. Severn has been an assistant football coach in Burns and in Arizona and was an assistant wrestling coach at Central. He takes over for Brick Cegelski, who resigned after 18 seasons as coach, the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reported. Cegelski went 85-87 in his tenure.

Greybull: Marty Wrage has accepted the head coaching post at Greybull, wyoming-football.com was notified. Wrage was previously a head football coach in Ogallala, Neb. He replaces Justin Bernhardt, who resigned after going 7-11 in two years as head coach, the Greybull Standard reported.

Lander: Assistant coach John Rounds has been promoted to be the new head coach. Rounds, who previously coached the Tigers’ offensive line and linebackers, replaces Doug Hughes, who went 26-29 in six years as head coach. Hughes is now Lander’s activities director.

Moorcroft: Dusty Petz will replace Steve Richter as Moorcroft’s coach, the coaches told wyoming-football.com via email. Petz is Moorcroft’s boys basketball coach. Richter was Moorcroft’s coach for 11 seasons, going 30-63.

Powell: Chanler Buck was named the interim head coach at Powell, AD Tim Wormald said via email. Buck was previously a volunteer assistant with Powell. He takes the place of Jim Stringer, who died in July after 11 seasons as head coach.

Rawlins: Corey Wheeler will be Rawlins’ head coach in 2014, the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle’s Jeremiah Johnke reported on Twitter. Wheeler will replace Tom Waring, who resigned after one season as head coach, the Rawlins Daily Times reported. Rawlins went 1-7 last season.

Rock RiverTerrance Reese will be the head coach for Rock River’s first varsity football season, school officials said via email to wyoming-football.com. He replaces Ray Moore, who resigned in February.

Rock Springs: David Hastings was named the Tigers’ new head coach in May, the school announced via Facebook. Hastings has previously coached in both Utah and Idaho. He takes over for Tom Jassman, who coached the Tigers for three years and went 6-24.

Wheatland: Dusty Hudson was named Wheatland’s new head football coach, AD Frank Jesse told wyoming-football.com via email. He replaces Scott Schultz, who resigned after eight seasons to pursue national opportunities as a strength coach. Schultz went 30-42 in his span.

New classifications and new conference alignments will bring significant changes to the 2014 Wyoming high school football schedule.

The Wyoming High School Activities Association released the 2014 football schedule to schools today at the statewide scheduling meeting in Casper. Class 4A is the only classification where significant changes were not made. Reclassification changed the number of schools in Class 2A, Class 1A 11-man and Class 1A six-man, prompting big overhauls to the schedules in those classifications.

With Tongue River and Moorcroft joining Class 1A 11-man from Class 2A and Saratoga and Wyoming Indian joining 1A 11-man from six-man, the most significant changes came at the Class 1A 11-man level. With an unbalanced conference alignment of seven teams in the East Conference at eight in the West, an East Conference team has a bye each week of the conference season. Schools may choose to fill that bye week with a sub-varsity opponent.

In Class 2A, where seven teams are now in each conference instead of eight, the dilemma of odd conference numbers was solved by having the teams not involved in conference games that week play each other. The fix created seven intriguing cross-conference matchups: Lyman-Big Horn, Mountain View-Burns, Newcastle-Greybull, Big Piney-Wheatland, Lovell-Thermopolis, Pinedale-Wright and Kemmerer-Glenrock.

Two longtime rivalries were brought back to life in the Week 1 nonconference schedule, where Riverside will play Greybull and Burns will play Pine Bluffs in interclass games. However, Big Horn and Tongue River will not renew their annual rivalry as part of the regularly scheduled season.

In six-man, the schedule was unbalanced due to the number of teams (13) in the classification after Wyoming Indian and Saratoga left for 11-man and Rock River moved from the junior-varsity level to varsity. The unbalanced conference alignment forces one team in the classification per week to have an open week, which, like in 11-man, can be filled with a sub-varsity opponent. Rock River, playing its first varsity season in school history next season, opens its schedule with road games at St. Stephens and NSI the first two weeks before hosting Kaycee in Week 3.

Class 3A’s schedule was also significantly reorganized, even though the same conference alignment carried over from 2013 to 2014. However, the 3A schedule’s organization — nonconference games the first three weeks, conference games the final five weeks — remained the same.

As in previous seasons, Class 3A, Class 2A and Class 1A schools may schedule their own games or scrimmages in Zero Week. Those contests will be scheduled throughout the year.

The Class 4A schedule did not change anything except for host sites; the 2014 schedule mirrors the 2013 schedule but with locations flipped for every matchup.

Here are some week-by-week highlights of key games:

Week 0: Kelly Walsh at Gillette. The Camels spanked the improved Trojans in the season opener last year, and if KW is a contender in 2014, it will have to show it in Campbell County to start the season.

Week 1: Natrona at Cheyenne East; Powell at Douglas. The rematches for both the Class 4A and Class 3A title games this year will be staged in Week 1. They’re the only title-game rematches of the season — Class 2A, Class 1A 11-man and Class 1A six-man’s title-game participants won’t play each other in the 2014 regular season. Other key games: Big Horn at Lovell; Dubois at Guernsey-Sunrise; Rock River at St. Stephens; Burns at Pine Bluffs.

Week 2: Guernsey-Sunrise at Kaycee. Both the Vikings and Buckaroos are set up to be contenders in the six-man East Conference next season, and this is an important early conference game. Other key games: Cheyenne Central at Gillette; Riverton at Star Valley; Thermopolis at Wheatland; Riverside at Burlington; Meeteetse at Snake River.

Week 3: Natrona at Gillette; Sheridan at Cheyenne East. A reprise of this year’s 4A semifinal round will be played in Week 3 next year — and they figure to be critical games again in 2014. Other key games: Star Valley at Douglas; Pinedale at Lovell; Wheatland at Newcastle; Shoshoni at Cokeville.

Week 4: Burns at Thermopolis. The Broncs get their chance at revenge against the Bobcats, who knocked them out of the playoffs this year and move into the same conference next year, at the halfway point in 2014. Other key games: Kelly Walsh at Cheyenne East; Cody at Star Valley; Torrington at Riverton; Lovell at Mountain View; Cokeville at Rocky Mountain; Lingle at Southeast; Midwest at Kaycee.

Week 5: 4A rivalry week (Cheyenne East at Cheyenne Central; Gillette at Sheridan; Natrona at Kelly Walsh.) The Oil Bowl will be played for the 50th time in 2014 and will take center stage, but the other two 4A rivalry games will be just as significant in the conference race. Other key games: Lander at Buffalo; Star Valley at Powell; Lyman at Lovell; Dubois at Meeteetse.

Week 6: Cody at Jackson. Both Broncs squads were improved in 2013 and will want to continue to build on that in 2014, but they’ll still have to go through each other to keep pace in the competitive 3A West. Other key games: Burns at Big Horn; Newcastle at Glenrock; Lingle at Lusk; Saratoga at Burlington; Hulett at Guernsey-Sunrise.

Week 7: Southeast at Lusk. Whenever the Cyclones and Tigers meet, it’s a big game. Next season’s matchup figures to be no different. Other key games: Sheridan at Natrona; Douglas at Riverton; Jackson at Powell; Big Horn at Newcastle; Lyman at Greybull; Rocky Mountain at Riverside; Midwest at Hulett.

Week 8: Mountain View at Lyman. In a week chock full of rivalry games, the Bridger Valley showdown may be the most crucial in terms of playoff seeding and conference championship races. Other key games: Cheyenne East at Gillette; Cody at Powell; Riverton at Lander; Star Valley at Jackson; Big Piney at Pinedale; Greybull at Lovell; Burlington at Rocky Mountain; Upton-Sundance at Southeast; Guernsey-Sunrise at Meeteetse; Kaycee at Hanna.

Rock Springs coach Tom Jassman resigned Tuesday as head football coach of Rock Springs.

Jassman had been the head coach of the Tigers the past three seasons. Rock Springs went 6-24 the past three seasons and 1-8 in 2013 but did qualify for the playoffs in 2011 and 2012.

Jassman said via email he resigned because the three-year commitment he had made to the program was complete. He said he made a promise to his wife to coach for only three seasons.

A replacement has not yet been named.

Sam Buck has taken over as head coach for Riverside, the Basin Republican-Rustler reported.

Buck took over for Ted Holmstrom prior to the Rebels’ loss to Lusk last week.

Holmstrom had previously coached at Laramie and Lyman. He was in his first year with the Rebels.

Wyopreps.com reported the change. Riverside AD Shane Schaffner told Wyopreps he could not share the reason why Holmstrom was no longer the coach. A story in the Lusk Herald about the game hinted Holmstrom was fired.

Riverside plays at Cokeville this week.

Midwest forfeited its Week 1 victory over Farson after the team used an ineligible player in the victory.

The Oilers beat the Pronghorns 61-21 on Saturday. The game is now listed as a 1-0 victory for Farson on the WHSAA scoreboard.

In an email sent to select media and forwarded to wyoming-football.com, WHSAA Associate Commissioner Trevor Wilson said Midwest made “an honest mistake” in playing the ineligible player.

Farson is now 1-0; Midwest is 0-1. The game will not affect conference standings, as Farson is in the Class 1A six-man West Conference and Midwest is in the East Conference.

Dubois was awarded a forfeit victory over Normative Services last week after the Wolves and Rams failed to meet on the field.

The WHSAA scoreboard page reflects the Rams’ victory. Dubois AD Tina Baker verified via email on Monday the status of the Rams’ victory.

The game was initially canceled. Dubois was scheduled to scrimmage a team from Natrona on Saturday.

The game was the scheduled season opener for both teams, but was a nonconference game. Dubois, which went undefeated last year, is now 1-0. NSI is 0-1.

Dubois hosts Farson on Friday, while NSI hosts Midwest on Saturday.
