I was alerted to a couple of missing last week when I was surfing the internet and stumbled across some archives at Saratoga High’s Web site. After some quick double-checking I added these games:

Added Saratoga’s 20-12 loss to the Wheatland JV on Oct. 14, 1993.

Added Saratoga’s 20-15 loss to the Cheyenne Central JV on Oct. 9-13, 1990 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t find a specific date or a location).

All of the updates have been made on all the relevant pages.

Some microfilm that I had ordered through interlibrary loan back in August finally showed up this week. It gave me a chance to tackle some missing games — and in the process I stumbled across one new game to add to the database.

Missing games

Found the date and location of Huntley’s 58-7 loss to Lyman, Neb., on Sept. 14, 1962 (it was in Lyman).

Found the score for Torrington’s 6-0 loss to Bayard, Neb., on Nov. 7, 1947.

Byes project

Added Pine Bluffs’ 33-6 loss to Broadwater, Neb., on Nov. 7, 1947.

Coaches Project: Updates for Hulett, Sunrise and Torrington. Thanks to Micki Tucker in Hulett, Casey Moats in Guernsey and Brian Harms in Torrington for their help!

For those of you who wonder how I got started with this project, click here. Back when I was in high school, I started putting together a game-by-game record for my alma mater, Midwest. That project expanded in college to what I have now. Anyway, most of that project was built using yearbooks in the MHS library, and a while back I went back and compared the scores on that list to the scores I’ve compiled since. From that, I came up with one addition and one correction that I recently verified:

Corrected the score for Midwest’s 13-7 victory over Upton on Oct. 12, 1956 (I had the score transposed, Upton winning 13-7)

Added Midwest’s 26-7 victory over the Natrona JV on Sept. 17, 1954

I’m still working on a couple more for MHS that don’t quite match up….

Coaches project: Updates for Cowley, Cokeville and Deaver-Frannie. Click here to see what I still need; I now have every coach’s name for every team from 1971 to the present.

Streaks: Somehow I forgot Rock Springs’ 22-game winning streak from 2001-02 when I put together the streaks page. No longer; that has been added to the streaks page.

Update: Lusk’s 20-game win streak from 1999-2000 is now listed on the streaks page, too. Thanks to Jerry Fullmer for the catch!

–patrick

The microfilm has gone mostly unused the past couple weeks. Midterms, teaching, etc., are taking precedence right now. Nevertheless, I made it down to Coe’s basement a couple times in the past couple weeks and knocked a few games off the missing games list:

Found the score for Pine Bluffs’ 26-6 loss to the Cheyenne Central JV on Oct. 28, 1954.

Removed two games that were not played: the Oct. 11, 1952, game between Big Piney and Baggs and the Oct. 26, 1951, game between Hanna and Baggs.

I also added one game: Rawlins’ 72-0 victory over Kemmerer on Oct. 3, 1953. This game also showed that I had listed the wrong record for Rawlins in 1953; that has been corrected. This loss for Kemmerer also extended its losing streak over this period to 24 games, an update reflected on the streaks page.

All the updates have been made on all the relevant pages.

I also updated Coaches Project entries for four programs: Byron, Lovell, Cokeville and Star Valley. Check out those individual team pages to see what’s new.

–patrick

Here are my most recent updates. Since I’m almost broke, I’m working at a job that actually pays money now, so updates may be a bit more few and far between until school starts again in August. I’m not sure anyone will notice but me….

Additions

Added Byron’s 33-6 victory over Colstrip, Mont., on Sept. 19, 1952.

Added a canceled game on Sept. 26, 1958, between the Worland Institute and Buffalo.

Added a pair of games for Byron for 1956 — at Burlington on Oct. 13 and at Manderson on Oct. 26 (and added both to the missing games list because I couldn’t find scores/results for either game). This was a state championship season for Byron, so I’m really trying hard to pin down every game they played in this season.

Added a pair of games for Albin for 1951 — at Dix, Neb., on Oct. 19 and at home against Harrisburg, Neb., on Nov. 2 (and added both to the missing games list because I couldn’t find scores/results for either game).

Missing games

Found the date for Deaver-Frannie’s 48-12 victory over Belfry, Mont., on Sept. 14, 1951.

Found the score for Huntley’s 38-0 loss to Lyman, Neb., on Sept. 27, 1957.

Found the location for Glendo’s 32-28 loss to Lyman, Neb., on Oct. 26, 1956 (it was in Glendo).

All-state teams

The 1973 Class A all-state team has been added to the all-state listings.

Coaches Project

Updates for Huntley.

One of the toughest aspects of this project has been securing scores played against out-of-state opponents. The number of missing games to the number of out-of-state games is ridiculously out of proportion. Fortunately, today, I made a couple big steps in rectifying this.

Using the interlibrary loan capabilities at Coe Library, I secured four microfilm rolls of the Rapid City Journal. Those four rolls helped me take six games off my missing games list — a significant dent in an ever-shrinking project.

I’m also in the process of obtaining some more microfilm from Rapid City (you can only get four at a time) and from Scottsbluff (that costs money). Anyway, I’m making a big dent in this part of the missing games project.

The six games KOed today:

Hulett had four games knocked off the missing games list, all from the early 1960s. I found the score for Hulett’s 25-6 victory over Hill City on Sept. 7, 1963, the score for Hulett’s 42-12 victory over New Underwood on Oct. 9, 1963, the score for Hulett’s 12-8 loss to Buffalo, S.D., on Sept. 14, 1962, and the score for Hulett’s 25-13 loss to Newell on Oct. 28, 1960.

I also found the scores for two Moorcroft games in 1989: a 49-6 loss to Lead on Sept. 8 and a 28-0 victory over Rapid City St. Martins on Sept. 16. The win over St. Martins was actually Moorcroft’s only victory that season.

That inspired me to look for some more stuff with a fresh attitude, and conversely I found some info that had been missing for a long time. This is what I found:

Byes Project

Added two games for Pine Bluffs in 1952 — a 19-12 victory over the Laramie JV on Sept. 20 and a 12-0 victory over the Scottsbluff, Neb., JV on Sept. 24.

Added Basin’s 13-13 tie with the Worland Institute on Sept. 10, 1954.

Missing games

Found the date and location of Midwest’s 34-6 victory over the Upton JV on Aug. 30, 2002. (This is part of Midwest’s sub-varsity 2002 season, which has been a tough season for me to pin down exact dates… but this game, at least, is done.)

Found the location for Rocky Mountain’s 26-0 victory over the Cody JV on Oct. 15, 1994 (it was in Cody).

Found the location for Hulett’s 42-12 loss to St. Thomas More, S.D., on Sept. 29, 1992 (it was in Hulett).

Found the score for Wheatland’s 6-0 loss to the Cheyenne East JV on Aug. 29, 1969.

Found the location of Huntley’s 41-12 victory over Harrison, Neb., on Oct. 12, 1962 (it was in Huntley).

Found the missing score for Meeteetse’s 40-20 loss to the Cody JV on Oct. 22, 1959.

Found the missing date for Huntley’s 46-6 victory over Albin in 1951 — Oct. 26.

Also, thanks to coach Ted Holmstrom down in Lyman, I have the score of the Eagles’ loss to Mountain View on Oct. 12, 1963 — 43-0. Coach Holmstrom has been a big help to me on locating some missing info for the Eagles and his help is really appreciated!

Coaches Project: New listings for Arvada-Clearmont.

All the updates have been made on all the relevant pages.

Also, research continues backward in time. Years through 1935 are complete, and 1934 has been started…. Hey, who knew Gebo High School had a team? Yep, the Gebo Miners. Oh, and Fort Laramie High School also played football for a couple years? Hooray for finding out cool new stuff!

–patrick

The late 1960s were a crazy time in the southeastern corner of Wyoming. Goshen Hole, the precursor to what is now Southeast, started its program in 1966, and Burns followed a year later. I spent a big portion of this week trying to track down more information on the first seasons of these two programs and found a couple games to update.

I added two games to Burns’ first season, both losses to the Pine Bluffs JV squad — 27-20 on Oct. 3 and 41-26 on Oct. 18. (These two losses extended Burns’ winless streak in that span to 24 games, a change updated on the streaks page.)

I also found the score for Goshen Hole’s 54-19 loss to Harrisburg, Neb., on Sept. 30, 1966, knocking it off the missing games list in the process.

My research also turned up two more new games, courtesy of the Byes Project. I added Huntley’s 33-6 loss to Lyman, Neb., sometime between Sept. 12-16, 1967 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t pin down a date or a location) and Midwest’s 32-7 victory over Glendo on Sept. 3, 1965.

I also took care of two missing games for Saratoga’s 1955 season. I found the score, date and location for Saratoga’s 18-12 loss to the Rawlins JV on Oct. 4 and the score for Saratoga’s 13-0 loss to the Laramie JV on Oct. 13.

Coaches Project: I didn’t add any new coaches, but I did fix a couple discrepancies where I had two coaches coaching at two different schools in the same season.

I updated Green River’s coach in 1969; it was Chuck Shelton, not Jerry Hart. I had Jerry Hart listed as coaching in both Green River and Star Valley in 1969, so I double-checked and Hart was in Afton while Shelton had the reins in Green River.

I also ran into this problem with Rand Klatt, who I had listed as coaching both Pinedale and Hulett in 1965. I double-checked, and Klatt was in Pinedale that year. So now I’m looking hard to find out who Hulett’s coach was in 1965. So far, no luck. If you know, leave a comment below!

Basketball: I have updated the scores I was missing for the state basketball tournaments in 1923, 1925, 1929 and 1930. The years 1925, 1929 and 1930 didn’t need much research done for them, but 1923 had to be built up and researched basically from scratch. The year 1924 still need some additional research, but I hope to have that completed within the next couple weeks. We’ll see…. Click here to see this side project, every score from every state basketball tournament (except, obviously, for 1924).

As I shared earlier this spring, I am working hard to fill in some missing info for some of the smaller schools in the Bighorn Basin. The past couple weeks, I’ve really concentrated on 1953 and 1954 and have a bunch of new updates to show for it.

For 1954, I added 10 new games to the database, including five for Meeteetse and three for Deaver-Frannie. Meeteetse’s five added games included a 25-0 loss to Byron on some day between Sept. 7-13 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t find the exact date or a location), a 20-6 victory over Burlington on Oct. 6, a 19-14 victory over the Cody JV on Oct. 14, a 43-31 loss to the Lovell JV on Oct. 20 and a 18-14 victory over the Cody JV on Oct. 28. For Deaver-Frannie, I added a victory over the Worland Institute on Oct. 15 (and added it to the missing games because I couldn’t find a score or a location), a 37-12 victory over Burlington on Oct. 22 (and added it to the missing games list because I couldn’t pin down the location) and a 36-18 loss to Cowley on Oct. 29. I also added a game between Lovell and Billings Central, Mont., on Oct 21 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t find a score) and Byron’s 19-18 victory over the Lovell JV on Nov. 9 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t find a location).

Digging into the 1953 season gave me four new games, all involving Deaver-Frannie. I have added Deaver-Frannie’s 37-0 victory over the Worland Institute on Oct. 3 (and added it to the missing games list because I couldn’t find the location), Cowley’s 21-20 victory over Deaver-Frannie on some day between or including Oct. 8-10 (and added it to the missing games list because I couldn’t find the exact date or a location), Deaver-Frannie’s 39-6 victory over Burlington on some day between or including Oct. 14-17 (and added it to the missing games list because I couldn’t find an exact date or a location) and Cowley’s 32-26 victory over Deaver-Frannie on Oct. 23.

I also explored Saratoga’s 1950 season but turned up more questions than answers. One game was added — the Panthers’ 21-13 loss to Pinedale on Sept. 22 — but two other games scheduled for Saratoga that season didn’t fit the rest of the state. Saratoga had a game scheduled with Lyman on Oct. 13, but Lyman played Farson that week; Saratoga also had a game scheduled with Hanna on Oct. 20, but Hanna played Reliance that day. Both of those games are staying off the database for now but are noted here.

Jackson’s 1951 season also saw a couple additions: a 14-6 loss to Green River on Oct. 16, and a game with Soda Springs, Idaho, on either Oct. 19 or Oct. 20 (added to the missing games list because I couldn’t find a date or a result).

Other additions

Added Wheatland’s 20-13 victory over the Laramie JV on Sept. 26, 1952.

Added  St. Mary’s 26-20 loss to the Laramie JV on Oct. 19, 1955.

Missing games

Found the location for the Oct. 18, 2008, game between the Hanna JV and Midwest (it was in Hanna).

Found the score of Ten Sleep’s 44-6 loss to the Belfry, Mont., JV on Oct. 20, 2007.

Found the date for the Sept. 5, 1981, game between the Evanston JV and Mountain View.

Found locations for two Hanna games in 1956 — the Oct. 9 game with Baggs (in Hanna) and the Oct. 19 game with Encampment (in Encampment).

Found the score for the Huntley-Albin game on Oct. 6, 1954 — a 33-33 tie. (This game also moved into fifth place all-time on the scoring records list on the list of highest scoring tie games.)

Found the score of Upton’s 28-20 victory over the Rapid City, S.D., JV on Oct. 17, 1957.

Also, for consistency’s sake, I removed two canceled games, one between Ten Sleep and Fort Washakie scheduled for Sept. 20, 2008, and the other between Burlington and Meeteetse scheduled for Oct. 20, 1989. Fort Washakie and Burlington didn’t have teams in those particular years.

All the updates have been made on all the relevant pages.

Coaches Project: Updates for Big Horn, Big Piney, Buffalo, Byron, Cowley, Encampment, Greybull, Huntley, Morton, Powell, Reliance, St. Mary’s, Snake River, Sunrise, Superior, University Prep. Check out those updates on those teams’ pages, and click here to see what else I’m missing.

–patrick

It’s been a serendipitous week in my research. I kind of stumbled into some great information about the Bighorn Basin’s six-man division in 1952. The info I found eliminated three games from my missing games list: I found the location for the Byron-Meeteetse game on Oct. 3 (Byron), the location for the Deaver-Frannie-Meeteetse game on Oct. 8 (Meeteetse) and the date and location for the Byron-Meeteetse game on Oct. 24 (Meeteetse).

I also added four games to the 1952 season: Cowley’s game at Meeteetse on Sept. 26 (also added to missing games because I couldn’t find a result); Cowley’s 44-21 victory over Deaver-Frannie on Oct. 3; Deaver-Frannie’s 43-35 victory over Meeteetse on Oct. 31; and Basin’s 13-12 loss to the Worland JV on Oct. 30.

The opening week of the 1951 season also turned up a few changes. I added two games — Byron’s 28-6 victory over Colstrip, Mont., and Deaver-Frannie’s 48-12 victory over Belfry, Mont. — but added them both to the missing games list because I couldn’t pin down exact dates or locations. Conversely, the game between Cowley and Colstrip scheduled for Sept. 15, 1951, was not played and came off the database completely.

This week, I spent a bunch of time trying to knock as many games as possible off the missing games list as well as opportunistic chip-aways at the Byes Project (trying to account for every open week listed on this site). Here are some other updates I made this week.

Missing games:

Found the location for Guernsey-Sunrise’s game with the Torrington JV on Sept. 4, 1965 (it was in Guernsey).

Removed an extra game scheduled for Nov. 11, 1950, between Rock Springs and Rawlins; the game was not scheduled originally and never played.

Found the score for Douglas’ 25-13 victory over Edgemont, S.D., on Sept. 30, 1949.

Noted that the Oct. 25, 1963, game between Burlington and Morton was canceled. Morton tried to find a last-minute replacement but couldn’t do it.

Found the score for Moorcroft’s 37-12 victory over Hulett on Oct. 14, 1955.

Found the date and location and corrected the score for the Lander JV’s 36-6 victory over Morton on Sept. 25, 1952 (it was in Lander; I originally had 32-6).

Found the location for Newcastle’s game with Pine Ridge, S.D., on Nov. 11, 1952 (it was in Newcastle).

Removed an extra game between Buffalo and Riverton on Sept. 8, 1950; it was never on Riverton’s schedule to begin with.

Removed an extra game between Sunrise and Albin on Sept. 26, 1950; they played a week later than that.

Found the date for the game between Burlington and Cowley on Sept. 29, 1950.

Found the location for the game between Hanna and Saratoga on Sept. 29, 1950 (it was in Hanna).

Noted that the Oct. 20, 1950, game between Thermopolis and Basin was canceled.

Byes Project:

Added Douglas’ 34-0 victory over the Natrona JV on Oct. 1, 1955.

Added Deaver-Frannie’s 20-8 victory over Meeteetse on Oct. 12, 1951.

Coaches Project: Updates for Albin, Byron, Cowley, Deaver-Frannie, Hanna, Powell, Saratoga, St. Mary’s, Superior and Thermopolis. I also made the decision to accept two initials as sufficient in place of a first name for identification; many newspapers in the 1940s and prior did not identify many people, especially high school football coaches, by their first names. Whenever possible, I’ve used the first name in place of the two initials, but in several cases I’ve decided to let the two initials be enough (despite a ton of searching).

The only football season I’ve found for the LaGrange Longhorns came in 1961, and for the past few years I had only found one game for that season — a 46-13 loss to Lingle.

Well, this week, I finally found some more info on the Longhorns’ 1961 season and I’ve added five more games to the Longhorns’ history. Sadly, for LaGrange, it didn’t get much better.

From what I’ve found, LaGrange finished the 1961 season with a 1-5 record. This week, I added four new games to the LaGrange season — a 27-6 loss to Bushnell, Neb., on Sept. 23, a 47-0 victory over Lyman, Neb., on Oct. 21, a 25-20 loss to Harrisburg, Neb., on Oct. 24 and a 15-7 loss to Pine Bluffs on Oct. 28. I also added a 25-8 loss to Huntley on Oct. 5 (a game that had been on the missing games list).

Here are the other updates I’ve recently made:

Coaches Project: Recent updates for Basin, Byron, Cowley, Dayton, Deaver-Frannie, Encampment, Farson, Greybull, Hanna, Hulett, Huntley, LaGrange, Lander, Lingle, Manderson, Moorcroft, Morton, Ranchester, Reliance, St. Mary’s, St. Stephens, Saratoga, Snake River/Baggs, Sundance, Sunrise, Superior, Wheatland, Worland Institute.

My new pet peeve school is Huntley. I need names of coaches for Huntley more than I need them for any other school at this point. Any help that anyone can toss my way as far as the Cardinals are concerned would be greatly appreciated…. To see everything I’m missing, click here.

Missing games: Found the score for Deaver-Frannie’s 40-0 victory over Manderson on Oct. 5, 1957. I also noted that two games — the Encampment-Hanna game on Oct. 18, 1957, and the Meeteetse-Burlington game on Nov. 1, 1957 — were canceled because of flu outbreaks.

All the updates have been made on all the relevant pages.
