The Midwest football team has set plans to play its home games in Casper this season — fallout from a leak of toxic chemicals from an abandoned oil well that closed the school indefinitely on May 26.

The school has yet to be reopened, even though the well near the school thought to be the source of the leak was plugged. Midwest students will start the school year in Casper, and games will be played in Casper as long as the school in Midwest remains closed.

Midwest games will be split between Natrona County and Kelly Walsh high schools, Midwest coach Ken Swieter and Midwest AD Susan Rodabaugh said.

Midwest has home games scheduled with Dubois (Week 1, Friday, Sept. 2); Lingle (Week 4, Friday, Sept. 23); Rock River (Week 5, Friday, Sept. 30) and Hanna (Week 8, Friday, Oct. 21) and also has a home Zero Week contest with Dubois and Snake River scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27.

The games against Dubois, Rock River and Hanna have tentatively been set to be played at Natrona County, while the Zero Week contest and the Lingle game are tentatively scheduled for Kelly Walsh. Game times and dates would not change.

Hulett and Hanna are also scheduled to play their Week 3 game (Saturday, Sept. 17) in Midwest. Plans for that game were not immediately known.

Swieter said Midwest’s practices will either be at the old CY Junior High fields in Casper or at the park near the former Westwood Elementary in west Casper, which is where Midwest’s kindergarten through eighth-grade students will be housed until the Midwest school can be reopened.

A school’s football schedule often looks vastly different from a school’s basketball schedule.

Ignore for a second the obvious differences in conference alignment and schedule length, and focus instead on conference games.

For most Wyoming high schools, conference games take up more than half of the basketball schedule. And, maybe more importantly, teams get two cracks at their conference opponents — once on the road, once at home.

What if football scheduling adapted the same approach?

A round-robin conference schedule that allowed teams two chances at their conference opponents would give teams schedules with reduced travel and increased focus on regional rivalry. It sounds odd, but it actually might work.

This idea is not completely foreign.

For 15 years, from 1960-74, the Class A Southwest schools (Star Valley, Evanston, Kemmerer, Green River and, eventually, Jackson) played a round-robin schedule where the teams played each other twice during the regular season. The Class B Southwest schools (Mountain View, Lyman, Pinedale, Big Piney and Cokeville) did the same from 1970-76. And that doesn’t even scratch the surface of schools that traditionally played each other twice during the regular season in football’s early days in the state (Cody-Powell, Lander-Riverton, Sundance-Upton and a host of others).

However, previous round-robin schedules fit into longer regular seasons, usually 10 weeks long. These days, Wyoming’s regular season fits into eight or nine weeks. That means, to fully execute a round-robin, no-byes schedule, we can’t have any more than four teams in a conference, giving schools the opportunity for six conference games and two non-conference games.

Splitting 49 11-man teams into four-team conferences turns out to be more difficult than first blush: It means either scaling back to three classifications of roughly 16 schools each or keeping four classifications but skewing to roughly 12 schools each. For our sake, we’ll stick with 12 per class — but that means three conferences per classification (except 1A 11-man and 1A six-man), which might make playoff qualifying a bit weird.

But whatever. Our focus for now is on the regular season, not the postseason.

Let’s give it a try.

When go to 12 teams and three conferences per class, some weird geographical splits appear. For example:

In 4A, it’s pretty much a given that we’ll have to separate the two Casper schools. With three schools (Gillette, Sheridan and Thunder Basin) in the northeast and three (Rock Springs, Green River and Evanston) in the southwest, we pretty much have to split the two Casper schools to make balanced conferences.

The same thing happens with the Fremont County schools Lander and Riverton in 3A. Again, pockets of three-school groupings — Pinedale, Star Valley and Jackson in the far west and Cody, Worland and Powell in the northwest — make it tough to keep Lander and Riverton together.

In 2A, we have to split neighbors Moorcroft and Newcastle — three-school pockets of Greybull, Thermopolis and Lovell in the Northwest and Glenrock, Burns and Wheatland in the southeast force us to split the northeast pairing of the Dogies and Wolves.

Meanwhile, in 1A, things get complicated because we have 13 remaining schools. Rather than two conferences of four teams apiece and one of five, I split the teams into four conferences of four, three, three and three schools. Because of that scheduling, most 1A 11-man teams had to play either three straight home games or three straight road games, something I worked to avoid in other classifications (along with having four road or home games in a five-week stretch) but couldn’t avoid for about half the schools in this conference setup.

Six-man gets to remain relatively unchanged except for conference structure.

Class 4A kept its nine-week schedule; other classifications stayed at eight weeks.

Here is a sample schedule of what Weeks 0-8 (with Zero Week for 4A only) might look like in 2018 if Wyoming adopted these basketball scheduling practices for football (note that “JOB” means JV, out-of-state or bye):

So, what do you think? Would basketball scheduling ideas work for football? Should the round-robin schedule make a comeback?

The 2016 Wyoming high school football schedule was released to schools this morning at the statewide scheduling meeting in Casper.

For 4A and 3A schools, the varsity schedules — which are set up by the Wyoming High School Activities Association — look almost exactly the same as the schedules for the past couple years

But for 2A, 1A 11-man and 1A six-man schools, where reclassification and opt-downs rearranged conferences across the state, the schedules will bring some new twists to next season.

The 4A schedule order is the same as the one used in 2014 and 2015. The 2016 schedule will be the same as the 2014 schedule and a mirror of last season.

The only changes to the 3A schedule were in Week 1 nonconference play, as Jackson will play Sugar-Salem, Idaho, instead of Teton, Idaho, in Week 1; Rawlins will play Lyman instead of Kemmerer in Week 1; and Torrington will play Wheatland instead of Glenrock in Week 1. The remainder of the 3A schedule matches that of 2014 and mirrors 2015.

The biggest changes came for the smallest schools, as reclassification forced new schedules to be constructed for Class 2A, Class 1A 11-man and Class 1A six-man. None of the schools in those classifications play the same schedule as the past two years.

In all, 17 new series will be played, nine in 11-man and eight in six-man. Of the 17 new series, four involve new six-man school Riverside, three involve new six-man school Lingle, three involve Snake River and three involve Wright. The 17 new series on tap include:

Lyman/Rawlins
Kemmerer/Rocky Mountain
Pinedale/Wheatland
Newcastle/Upton-Sundance
Pine Bluffs/Wind River
Tongue River/Wyoming Indian
Upton-Sundance/Wright
Cokeville/Wright
Wright/Wyoming Indian
Kaycee/Riverside
Lingle/Snake River
Kaycee/Lingle
Lingle/Rock River
Burlington/Snake River
Riverside/Snake River
Riverside/St. Stephens
Farson/Riverside

Some highlights to the schedule:

The Bridger Valley Bowl between Mountain View and Lyman will be played in Week 2 instead of acting as the schools’ regular-season finale.

The Sublette County rivalry game between Pinedale and Big Piney was moved from Week 8 to Week 5.

Wheatland and Torrington will renew their rivalry via an interclass game in Week 1. The two schools played each other every year for decades before missing each other on the schedule the past three years.

Six-man neighbors in Carbon County, Snake River and Hanna, will not play each other in 2016. With Hanna in the East Conference and Snake River in the West — and with the nonconference schedule reduced to one game for six-man schools — the Miners and Rattlers will miss each other on the schedule for the first time since six-man came back to Wyoming in 2009.

Similarly, Laramie County neighbors Burns (2A) and Pine Bluffs (1A 11-man) won’t play each other in 2016. The two schools renewed their rivalry the past two years after missing each other for a few years prior to that.

In 2A, with seven schools per conference, one team from the East and one from the West will meet in weeks where they don’t play a conference game, as has been done the past couple years. However, most of the matchups have changed, with Wheatland playing Pinedale in Week 2; Big Horn playing Kemmerer in Week 3; Greybull playing Burns in Week 4; Moorcroft playing Lovell in Week 5; Newcastle playing Big Piney in Week 6; Glenrock playing Lyman in Week 7; and Mountain View playing Thermopolis in Week 8.

In 1A 11-man, with only six schools per conference, teams will have three non-conference weeks, much like 3A. Games in Weeks 2 and 3 in 1A 11-man will be cross-conference games, with several — including Pine Bluffs/Wind River, Tongue River/Wyoming Indian, Cokeville/Wright and Wright/Wyoming Indian — the first games between the participating schools.

Class 1A six-man will have three new teams. Burlington will open its six-man era by hosting Normative Services; Riverside will play its first six-man game at defending state champion Kaycee; Lingle will play at Snake River to start six-man play. Riverside and Lingle, who are opting down to six-man, will be ineligible for the postseason.

With an even number of teams in each classification, all schools in both 1A classifications have full eight-game schedules.

Class 3A-1A teams can add Zero Week games, scrimmages or other contests. Game times and specific dates will be set by the participating schools; dates listed are the Friday of the week when most of the games are expected to be played.

When Cheyenne Central opens the 2015 season on Friday in Casper against Natrona, the Indians and Mustangs will extend a tradition that dates back 96 years.

The two schools have played each other every season since 1920, the longest such streak in state history — and a streak that shows no signs of stopping any time soon.

Although the two schools first played each other in 1908, they’ve played each other in every season since 1920. Of course, in 1920, Wyoming schools didn’t have many options: Only six schools in the state had football teams.

Central and Natrona have been on each other’s regular-season schedules for 95 of those 96 years. In 2004, the two teams did not have a regular-season game scheduled, but they met in the Class 5A playoff semifinals to continue their consecutive years played streak.

Natrona and Central played each other twice in a season four times: in 1935 (the second game was part of the first triangular playoff in state history), 1936 (to decide a playoff qualification after tying in their regular-season game), 1990 (in the playoff semifinals) and 2005 (again in the playoff semifinals).

Their meeting this season will be the 102nd in the series. NC leads the all-time series 52-46-3, with Central having a 28-22-1 series lead in Cheyenne while NC leads in Casper 29-18-2 (NC won the only neutral-site matchup).

Even so, this series is not the most-played series in state history. That honor goes to the Central-Laramie series, which has been played 130 times. However, the Indians and Plainsmen didn’t play each other in 1999, breaking a series that dated back to 1919.

The 20 longest active series in Wyoming high school football that are scheduled to continue this year, and the year the streak began, are:

1. Cheyenne Central-Natrona, 1920

2. Lander-Riverton, 1922

3. Cody-Powell, 1941 (they’ve been on each other’s schedules since 1921 but the 1940 game was not played; Powell won it in a forfeit)

4. Powell-Worland, 1945

5. Big Piney-Pinedale, 1952

6. Lyman-Mountain View, 1955

7t. Big Piney-Lyman, 1956

7t. Big Piney-Mountain View, 1956

9. Jackson-Star Valley, 1959

10t. Cheyenne Central-Cheyenne East, 1960

10t. Cheyenne East-Laramie, 1960

12t. Gillette-Kelly Walsh, 1965

12t. Kelly Walsh-Natrona, 1965

14. Douglas-Torrington, 1967

15. Shoshoni-Wind River, 1969

16. Gillette-Sheridan, 1970

17t. Gillette-Natrona, 1971

17t. Natrona-Sheridan, 1971

19. Glenrock-Newcastle, 1974

20. Pine Bluffs-Southeast, 1978

Several other series have been active for at least 20 years and are scheduled to continue this year. Those series, with starting year, include:

Lusk-Southeast, 1979; Kemmerer-Lyman, 1980; Evanston-Rock Springs, 1983; Jackson-Lander, 1983; Kemmerer-Mountain View, 1983; Lusk-Pine Bluffs, 1983; Powell-Star Valley, 1983; Star Valley-Worland, 1983; Douglas-Rawlins, 1985; Natrona-Rock Springs, 1985; Greybull-Riverside, 1987 (the Basin-Greybull series goes back to 1983); Big Piney-Kemmerer, 1989; Cheyenne East-Rock Springs, 1990; Laramie-Rock Springs, 1990; Buffalo-Powell, 1991; Cheyenne East-Evanston, 1991; Lingle-Lusk, 1991; Lingle-Pine Bluffs, 1991; Burlington-Riverside, 1993.

Streaks that have been going at least 10 years and are scheduled to continue this year include: Burns-Wright, 1995; Burlington-Shoshoni, 1999; Cheyenne Central-Laramie, 2000; Cheyenne Central-Rock Springs, 2000; Buffalo-Rawlins, 2001; Buffalo-Worland, 2001; Cokeville-Shoshoni, 2001; Jackson-Teton, Idaho, 2001; Kemmerer-Pinedale, 2001; Lyman-Pinedale, 2001; Mountain View-Pinedale, 2001; Jackson-Powell, 2002; Kelly Walsh-Sheridan, 2002; Cheyenne Central-Evanston, 2003; Evanston-Laramie, 2003; Greybull-Lovell, 2003; Lyman-Greybull, 2003; Newcastle-Custer, S.D., 2003; Rawlins-Torrington, 2003; Buffalo-Douglas, 2004; Buffalo-Lander, 2004; Buffalo-Torrington, 2004; Cheyenne East-Gillette, 2004; Cheyenne East-Kelly Walsh, 2004; Riverside-Rocky Mountain, 2004; Rocky Mountain-Wind River, 2004.

In addition to the Central-Laramie streak, which was broken in 1999, one other long streak was recently broken: Torrington-Wheatland. The series ended in 2012, as the two schools staged a Zero Week scrimmage instead of a game in 2013, breaking a streak that began in 1923. They had a Zero Week scrimmage again in 2014 and are scheduled for another scrimmage this week.

As usual, Zero Week picks for all classifications except 4A come with a disclaimer about what’s a “game” and counted in the standings and what’s not. Remember, I count different than the WHSAA does. For the record, here are the criteria I use to judge whether or not to call an event a “game,” and therefore list it in the standings (and, eventually, as part of the team record on this site):

1. Was the game played with four 12-minute quarters with normal timing rules?

2. Were officials used? And were normal rules of play instituted for the game?

3. Was score kept?

In short, if you don’t want it to count, don’t keep score….

This season, Class 4A has the only contests that will be Wyoming-vs.-Wyoming “games.” Every other contest involving Wyoming teams alone is set up as a controlled scrimmage or jamboree of some kind.

Of course, I welcome your thoughts, too. So what do you think about the opening week of the season? Go ahead and leave a comment and we can chat about what’s going on in Wyoming during Zero Week.

Note: This post was updated 12/2/14 to reflect Newcastle’s Week 1 game against Lead-Deadwood, S.D., which was added to the schedule Dec. 1 by the WHSAA.

The 2015 Wyoming high school football schedule, which the Wyoming High School Activities Association released Tuesday at the annual statewide scheduling meeting in Casper, has few surprises.

In fact, the 2015 schedule is a mirror of the 2014 schedule.

Wyoming is in the second year of a two-year reclassification cycle, so the mirrored schedule was expected.

A few highlights of the schedule include:

Week 0: Natrona at Cheyenne Central. The Indians were the highest-seeded non-“Big Four” team last year. Central’s rise will be tested by the Mustangs straight away in Week 0.

Week 1: Guernsey-Sunrise at Dubois. This year’s 1A six-man title game combatants will face each other in the season opener next season. Other key games: Cheyenne East at Natrona; Douglas at Powell; Lovell at Big Horn; Rocky Mountain at Tongue River; Mountain View at Cokeville.

Week 2: Cody at Douglas. Just like in six-man, we don’t have to wait long into 2015 to see a rematch of the 3A title game from 2014. Other key games: Star Valley at Riverton; Wheatland at Thermopolis; Shoshoni at Rocky Mountain; Upton-Sundance at Lusk; Kaycee at Guernsey-Sunrise; Snake River at Meeteetse.

Week 3: Gillette at Natrona. Three weeks, three title-game rematches. The Camels and Mustangs, longtime rivals, meet again in Casper in Week 3. Other key games: Cheyenne East at Sheridan; Douglas at Star Valley; Jackson at Rawlins; Powell at Riverton; Newcastle at Wheatland; Dubois at Farson.

Week 4: Riverton at Torrington. Two on-the-rise programs in 3A face off in what could be their biggest game against each other in years. Other key games: Mountain View at Lovell; Rocky Mountain at Cokeville; Tongue River at Lusk.

Week 5: Meeteetse at Dubois. Step aside, 4A rivalries — this six-man showdown has been huge each of the past three years. Other key games: Cheyenne Central at Cheyenne East; Kelly Walsh at Natrona; Sheridan at Gillette; Rawlins at Riverton; Torrington at Douglas; Lingle at Upton-Sundance; Hanna at Guernsey-Sunrise.

Week 6: Lusk at Lingle. This game has decided the 1A 11-man East Conference title each of the past two years. Other key games: Douglas at Rawlins; Jackson at Cody; Wind River at Shoshoni; Dubois at Snake River.

Week 7: Newcastle at Big Horn. These two programs have had some donnybrooks the past couple years. The 2A East title may be on the line again. Other key games: Natrona at Sheridan; Powell at Jackson; Riverton at Douglas; Greybull at Lyman; Burlington at Shoshoni; Lingle at Tongue River; Kaycee at Snake River.

Week 8: Gillette at Cheyenne East. Two consistently good programs will meet with the memory of a 2OT classic not far from their minds. Other key games: Jackson at Star Valley; Lander at Riverton; Powell at Cody; Big Horn at Wheatland; Lyman at Mountain View; Rocky Mountain at Burlington; Hanna at Kaycee; Snake River at Farson.

Here’s a look at the 2015 schedule, first by week and then by team. Keep in mind that Class 3A-1A teams can add Zero Week games, scrimmages or other contests and may fill any open weeks on their own. Game times and specific dates will be set by the participating schools; dates listed are the Friday of the week when most of the games are expected to be played.
