Don Maggi will be the new football coach in Green River.

Maggi was the offensive coordinator at Natrona County (see bio here).

Maggi takes over for Darren Howard, who was 22-19 in four years with the Wolves, including a state runner-up finish in 2008. Howard is taking an administrative position at Green River High. The Wolves were 2-8 last year but will be moving from Class 4A to Class 3A in 2012.

This is the fifth head coach opening in the state this year; openings at Kelly Walsh and Torrington have already been filled, while openings at Rock Springs and Greybull, last I knew, were still open.

The Green River opening is an attractive one for several reasons — one of those is all the experience in the building. Former Wolf coaches Howard, Jason Fuss and Tom Wilson are all now in administrative positions at the school.

Maggi will also teach social studies at GRHS.

Wilson announced the hiring in a press release on Tuesday. The Casper Star-Tribune reported the hiring; see the CST story here.

According to sources, John Scott was offered the job in Rock Springs, accepted, however the school board said no because of the high salary with the PE position. There is an article on this in the Rock Miner. This will be discussed futher at a special board meeting tonight, amoung other things.

The school board shot down the appointment of John Scott. It had to do with cost of the position.

  4. Dont believe the cost part of it…….

I’ll let Patrick do some digging of his own before I go into detail. I have a source pretty close to the situation, and the cost issue is just the scapegoat. This is a very professional site so I dont want to ruin Patrick’s hard work.

I played for Coach Scott in college, and it is a shame that he will not be able to bring his talents and knowledge to Rock Springs. That program could use somebody with his passion for the game.

Again, interesting to hear. Thanks for the info, guys. Unfortunate for RS, because John Scott has been a successful coach at every stop he has had. I have had limited personal dealings with him, but I have heard a lot of people praise his coaching abilities, and his record speaks volumes.

The Tigers have a new coach—-Tom Jassman—He has been an asst. coach for the Tigers since 1998 and served under Carl Romanowski, Jaime Christenson, and Tony Yerkovich. Good guy and good luck to him—-

Thanks Steve. Story posted. Now seeking thoughts from RS. Read his short bio online and he seems like a good fit — he knows the program and the players and seems ready for this step.
